Woodworking Instructors
CASEY BURKITT

Casey is a product designer and builder. He began honing his skills as a small boy assisting his father in the shop. Since then he’s worked as home remodelor constructing and deconstructing houses, as book binder, and a product designer. He enjoys breathing new life into old, forgotten treasures from a simple coat of paint to turning old growth lumber into furniture full of history and character.
ALEX ENARSON

Alex Enarson is a Chicago-based furniture builder, Rebuilding Exchange employee, and owner of the company GRAVE TO CRADLE. Working from his home studio, he uses reclaimed, salvaged, and scavenged materials to build unique and functional pieces from his own designs. An amateur forester, Alex loves building with lumber made from urban wood. You can reach him Friday–Sunday at the Rebuilding Exchange, or atalex.enarson@rebuildingexchange.org.
BLAKE SLOANE

Blake is a carpenter, designer, and teacher. He’s an avid scavenger of alleyways, thrift stores, and even his grandma’s attic for salvaged materials to incorporate into his work and classes. As workshop director at the Rebuilding Exchange, Blake leads the “rustic workshop” series and teaches wood shop in the job training program. He works to promote sustainability by re-purposing well-constructed artifacts from past generations. The result? Contemporary, design-savvy objects with a classic, rugged aesthetic that marries the past with the present. For example, a desk constructed from old doors cleverly includes a slit for hiding computer wires. More examples of his work can be found at blakesloane.com.
PAWEL SMAL

Pawel Smal is an artisan, furniture maker, designer, and entrepreneur. After graduating from Bauhaus Apprenticeship Institute in 2004, Pawel launched his own studio to create objects and designs with a focus on reclaimed materials. Pawel is passionate about all aspects of sailing, from constructing sailboats to occasionally sinking them. As if he didn’t have enough hobbies, he’s also an accomplished Polish translator and interpreter.
